Jam Master Jay was born on January 21, 1965, in Brooklyn, New York. He grew up in a musical family and developed a passion for DJing at an early age. Murder and Investigation
Jam Master Jay was shot and killed in his studio in Jamaica, Queens on October 30, 2002. He was shot in the head while playing video games when two people burst in and fired. There were multiple other people in the studio, and another person was shot in the leg, per The New York Times.
The motive and the identity of the killers remained a mystery for nearly 18 years, as the case went cold and witnesses refused to cooperate. The police suspected that the murder was related to a drug deal gone bad, but they lacked sufficient evidence to make any arrests.
In August 2020, two men were finally charged with the murder of Jam Master Jay, after a federal grand jury indicted them on murder and drug charges. The men, identified as Ronald Washington and Karl Jordan Jr., were both acquaintances of Jay and had been involved in a cocaine trafficking operation with him. They allegedly killed him after a dispute over money and drugs, according to the prosecutors.
In May 2021, a third man, Jay Bryant, was also charged with the murder, after his DNA was found at the crime scene. He was already in custody on unrelated federal drug charges. All three men pleaded not guilty and are awaiting trial.
