Life and Career

John Okafor was born on October 17, 1961, in Enugu, Nigeria. He had a humble upbringing and faced many challenges in his early life. He lost his father when he was 15 and survived a near-fatal poisoning by his friend. He also survived a ghastly car accident that claimed the lives of his two friends.

He started his acting career in 1978, but rose to fame in 2004 after starring in the movie “Mr Ibu”, which became his stage name. He played the role of a clumsy and foolish man who always got into trouble. The movie was a huge success and spawned several sequels and spin-offs. He went on to feature in over 200 Nollywood movies, such as “Keziah”, “9 Wives”, “Police Recruit”, “Mr Ibu in London”, “Mr Ibu and His Son”, and “Mr Ibu and the Kidnappers”.

He was known for his hilarious facial expressions, body language, and dialogue delivery. He won several awards and accolades for his performances, including the Best Actor in a Leading Role at the Africa Movie Academy Awards in 2007 and the Lifetime Achievement Award at the Nollywood Movies Awards in 2014.

He was also a philanthropist and a humanitarian who supported various causes and charities. He was the ambassador of the Rotary Club of Nigeria and the United Nations World Habitat Ambassador. He also advocated for peace and unity among Nigerians.

Illness and Death

John Okafor’s health problems began in October 2023, when he was diagnosed with an undisclosed illness that affected his leg. He underwent several surgeries and treatments, but his condition worsened. He appealed to his fans and well-wishers to help him raise funds for his medical bills, which amounted to over 100 million naira (about $240,000).

In November 2023, he had to have his leg amputated to save his life. His family announced the sad news on his Instagram page, saying that it was a difficult decision, but a necessary one. They also thanked his fans for their prayers and support.

In December 2023, he was discharged from the hospital and returned to his home in Lagos. John Okafor is survived by his wife, Stella Maris Okafor, and his 13 children, including his son, Daniel Okafor, and his adopted daughter, Jasmine Chioma Okafor, who were arrested in January 2024 for allegedly hacking into his phone and stealing $60,700 from his account. They have not commented on the allegations and are expected to appear in court on March 11, 2024, for the next hearing.
